Day-by-Day Plan

1
Arrive Delhi — First impressionsDelhi

Day 1Arrive Delhi — First impressions

Delhi, North India

Land at Indira Gandhi International Airport and check into your hotel. Delhi is overwhelming on first contact — give yourself the afternoon to recover from the journey. Start gently: a walk through the leafy diplomatic enclave of Lodhi Colony or a sunset stroll around Humayun's Tomb (one of Delhi's most underrated monuments and the architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal).

AfternoonHumayun's TombThe 1570 Mughal mausoleum that directly inspired the Taj Mahal. Entry $6 USD for foreigners. Far less crowded than the Taj.
EveningKhan Market or Connaught PlaceDinner at an upscale Indian restaurant. Khan Market is safer for first-night eating — reliable food, English menus, air conditioning.

Delhi — Old City & New CityDelhi

Day 2Delhi — Old City & New City

Delhi, North India

Delhi is two cities in one: the chaotic Mughal labyrinth of Old Delhi (Shahjahanabad, built 1638) and the rational colonial geometry of New Delhi (Lutyens's Delhi, built 1911–31). Today covers both. Start early in Old Delhi before the heat — the Red Fort and Jama Masjid are at their best before 10am.

08:00Jama MasjidIndia's largest mosque. Climb the southern minaret for views over Old Delhi's rooftops. Entry free; camera charge ₹300. Dress modestly and remove shoes.
09:30Red Fort (Lal Qila)Shah Jahan's 17th-century fortress. Foreigner entry $10 USD. Allow 90 minutes inside. The Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience) once housed the Peacock Throne.
11:00Chandni ChowkDelhi's oldest bazaar — a compressed mile of spice merchants, sari shops, and street food. Hire a cycle-rickshaw ($2–3 USD) to navigate it without losing your mind.
14:00India Gate & RajpathThe ceremonial heart of New Delhi. India Gate (war memorial), the President's House at the end of the boulevard. Best at dusk when the arch is lit.
16:00Qutb MinarSouth Delhi's 12th-century victory tower — the world's tallest brick minaret at 73 metres. UNESCO listed. Entry $6 USD. Allow 1 hour.

Day 3Delhi → Agra — The Taj at Sunset

Take the morning Gatimaan Express train from Hazrat Nizamuddin station (2 hours, $10–15 USD in chair car class) — the fastest and most comfortable way to reach Agra. Arrive by noon, check in, then time your first Taj Mahal visit for the late afternoon when the light turns golden and crowds thin slightly.

15:00Mehtab BaghThe garden directly across the Yamuna River from the Taj — the best viewpoint in Agra, and almost empty. Free to enter. The Taj reflected in the river at sunset is extraordinary.
17:00Taj Mahal — First VisitForeigner entry $13 USD. Gates close at sunset. The late afternoon light on white marble is unmatched. Hire an ASI-licensed guide at the gate ($10–15 USD) — the iconography without context is half the experience.

Agra — Taj at Sunrise + Agra FortAgra

Day 4Agra — Taj at Sunrise + Agra Fort

Agra, North India

The Taj Mahal at sunrise is one of the great travel experiences on Earth. Set an alarm for 5am. After sunrise, a full morning at Agra Fort — then an optional detour to the ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri before the evening drive to Jaipur.

06:00Taj Mahal — SunriseArrive at the East Gate by 6am when it opens. The first 45 minutes before other visitors arrive in numbers are extraordinary. Same $13 USD ticket as yesterday if purchased the same calendar day.
09:00Agra FortThe Red Fort of Agra — Shah Jahan's palace and, later, his prison. Foreigner entry $8 USD. From the fort's battlements, the Taj is visible 2.5 km away: Shah Jahan spent his last years gazing at his wife's tomb from captivity.
13:00Fatehpur Sikri (optional)40km west of Agra — Akbar's abandoned sandstone capital, perfectly preserved and remarkably uncrowded. Entry $6 USD. Add 2.5 hours to your day if time allows.
17:00Drive to Jaipur4.5-hour drive via the Yamuna Expressway and NH 21. Arrive Jaipur by 9–10pm.

Jaipur — Forts, Palaces & the Pink CityJaipur

Day 5Jaipur — Forts, Palaces & the Pink City

Jaipur, Rajasthan

Jaipur is the most photogenic city in India for many travellers — a walled city of rose-pink buildings, turbaned merchants, and monumental Mughal and Rajput architecture. Start early at Amber Fort before the heat builds and the day-trippers arrive.

07:30Amber FortOne of India's most spectacular forts. Foreigner entry $6 USD. Arrive early — the fort fills by 10am. The Sheesh Mahal (Hall of Mirrors) and the views from the ramparts over Maota Lake are unmissable.
11:00City Palace & Jantar MantarCombined ticket available. City Palace houses the Maharaja's collection of arms, textiles, and art. Jantar Mantar next door is the world's largest stone observatory (1727 CE) — its instruments are still accurate. Entry $7 USD combined.

15:30Johari Bazar & Bapu BazarJaipur's legendary shopping streets. Johari Bazar for gems and silver jewellery, Bapu Bazar for block-print textiles and leather mojari shoes. Bargain confidently — first price is never last price.
