Udaipur Travel Guide – India's City of Lakes
Udaipur is the most romantic city in India — a dreamscape of cream palaces, mirror-still lakes, and rooftop restaurants where the City of Lakes earns its name at every glance. From the floating Lake Palace to the Bond-film hilltop of Sajjangarh, every view here feels composed for a painting.

- SIM Cards: Get a prepaid SIM (Airtel/Jio) at the airport — much cheaper than roaming.
- Cash vs Card: UPI & cards work in most places, but keep some INR cash for autos and small vendors.
- Currency: Indian Rupee (₹ INR). Exchange at the airport or use an ATM — avoid unofficial money changers.
- Time Zone: IST (UTC+5:30). India has a single time zone with no daylight saving — clocks never change.
- Navigation: Google Maps works well across India including offline mode — download the city map before arrival.
- Hygiene: Drink bottled water only. Street food at busy stalls is generally safe.
- Plugs & Voltage: India uses Type C / D / M plugs at 230V 50Hz. US/AU devices need a voltage converter, not just an adapter.

Udaipur is the most romantic city in India — and the competition is stiff. Set around a chain of mirror-still lakes in the southern Aravalli Hills, it is a city of cream-coloured palaces, flower-lined ghats, rooftop restaurants with sunset views over the water, and a pace of life that invites you to linger. The City Palace — the largest palace complex in Rajasthan — rises in a tiered cascade above Lake Pichola, and its marble island hotel, the Lake Palace (one of the world's most photographed hotels), floats ethereally in the centre of the lake. Udaipur was used as the principal location in the James Bond film Octopussy (1983), and scenes filmed here remain some of the most visually distinctive in the franchise. Budget from $50 USD (₹4,200) per day; luxury hotels on the lake from $300–800 USD (₹25,000–67,000) per night.

Look for guides with government-issued Ministry of Tourism photo ID badge. Official guides are available at the City Palace ticket counter inside the main entrance.

Touts on the approach road to City Palace will offer guide services at ₹1,000–2,000. These are unofficial — walk past them to the official counter inside.
Udaipur earns its reputation as Rajasthan's most romantic city — things to do include exploring City Palace (the largest in Rajasthan), taking a boat ride on Lake Pichola to the Jag Mandir island, watching the sun set from Sajjangarh Monsoon Palace above the city, and wandering the narrow lanes of the old city between Jagdish Temple and the ghats. A Udaipur itinerary of 3 days lets you cover all the main sights at a relaxed pace; add a half day at Fateh Sagar Lake and the Saheliyon ki Bari garden. Udaipur travel tips for foreigners: it is one of India's safest and most tourist-friendly cities; rickshaw drivers will quote inflated prices from the bus stand — use Uber or walk the old city (it's compact); and the rooftop restaurants around the Lake Pichola ghats are atmospheric but food quality varies significantly.

Getting Around Udaipur
Local transport options & travel times between attractions
Udaipur is compact and walkable around the Old City — City Palace, Jagdish Temple, and the ghats are all within a 10-minute walk of each other. Auto-rickshaws handle the rest of the city. Scooter rental lets you explore the lake loop independently.
Auto-Rickshaw
Excellent₹50–200 ($0.60–2.40) for city trips
Negotiate before boarding — meters are rare. Short hops around Old City: ₹50–80. City Palace to Fateh Sagar: ₹100–150. Always confirm the price before getting in.
E-Rickshaw
Good₹20–80 ($0.24–0.95)
Good for the City Palace to Jagdish Temple stretch and the lakeside lanes. Eco-friendly and slow — ideal for short hops.
Private Taxi / Ola
Good₹1,500–3,000/day ($18–36)
Best for combining Sajjangarh and Fateh Sagar in a single day. Ola available in Udaipur. Agree on all stops and waiting time before starting.
Scooter / Bicycle Rental

Is Udaipur Safe for Tourists?
Real-world safety guidance & cultural tips for international visitors
Udaipur is one of the safest tourist cities in India — smaller and quieter than Jaipur or Delhi, with a tourism culture built around the romantic lake setting. The main risks are non-violent: inflated prices for the lake view, unofficial boat operators, and persistent souvenir touts near City Palace.
Only use RTDC official boats from the City Palace jetty — identifiable by the RTDC signage and fixed price (₹400). Private boats offering 'better views' or access to the Lake Palace are not licensed for tourist passengers.
Touts near the City Palace entrance offer guides at inflated prices (₹1,000–2,000). Official guides are available at the ticket counter inside the complex at government rates (₹500–800 for 2 hours). Walk past the approach-road touts.
Remove shoes before entering Jagdish Temple. Photography may be restricted inside the inner sanctum — ask first. The morning aarti (4:15am) draws devotees — be respectful of the religious atmosphere.
Udaipur's rooftop restaurants charge 20–40% more than comparable food at ground level. You are paying for the lake view. Check the menu posted at the entrance before being seated.
Swimming in Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar is prohibited. Both lakes have currents, and Fateh Sagar can be rough during and after the monsoon. The ban is enforced.
Tipping Guide
Restaurants
Not mandatory. 10% at mid-range restaurants is generous. Most upscale lake-view restaurants add a service charge — check before tipping extra.
Auto-Rickshaw
Not expected. Round up to the nearest ₹10 if you want. Settle fare before the journey.
Hotels
₹50–100 per bag for porters. ₹100/day for housekeeping at heritage hotels.
Guides & Drivers
₹300–500 for a half-day guide (beyond the agreed ticket-counter rate). The in-house audio guide (₹100) is a good self-guided alternative.
Best Time to Visit
Month-by-month weather, festivals & crowd guide
October to February is the golden window — perfect temperatures (9–27°C), clear skies, and the lakes full from the monsoon. March is excellent too, with the Mewar and Gangaur festivals. The brutal May–June heat (38–42°C) and the monsoon (July–August) deter most visitors, though the lakes are dramatically full and prices drop significantly.
Month by Month
Key Festivals & Events
Mewar Festival
Udaipur's welcome to spring — processions of deities through the old city, cultural performances, folk music, and fireworks over Lake Pichola.
Gangaur Festival
18-day Rajasthani festival honouring Goddess Gauri — elaborate lakeside processions and traditional music. The most important festival in Udaipur's calendar.
Shilpgram Crafts Fair
10-day festival of folk arts and crafts at the Shilpgram rural arts centre, 3km from the city. Artisans from across Rajasthan, with folk music and dance evenings.

Off Season

- ✓Sajjangarh at monsoon is extraordinary (built to watch clouds)

Food & Dining in Udaipur
What to eat, where to eat it, and how to stay safe
Udaipur's food scene is dominated by rooftop restaurants cashing in on lake views, but the underlying Rajasthani cooking is excellent — dal baati churma, gatte ki sabzi, and laal maas are all at their best here. Mawa kachori (sweet stuffed pastry) and rose lassi are Udaipur's signature snacks, and both are unavailable anywhere else at this quality.
Dal Baati Churma
Must TryRestaurant
The defining Rajasthani meal: baked wheat balls (baati) cracked open and drowned in ghee, served with lentil dal and sweet crumbled churma. Rich, smoky, and unlike anything else in Indian cuisine.
Vegan note: Not vegan — ghee is integral. A version without ghee is a lesser dish.
Natraj Dining Hall (Old City, near Jagdish Temple) for an authentic, no-frills version. Ambrai Restaurant for lakeside ambience.
Gatte ki Sabzi
Restaurant
Chickpea flour dumplings simmered in a tangy yoghurt-based gravy — one of Rajasthan's most distinctive vegetarian dishes. Essential order alongside the thali.
Any traditional Rajasthani thali restaurant in the Old City. Natraj Dining Hall does a reliable version.
Laal Maas
Restaurant
Rajasthan's fierce mutton dish — slow-cooked in a dark red gravy of dried mathania chillies. Genuinely hot and deeply satisfying.
Upre Restaurant (City Palace road) or Charcoal by Carlsson for a more contemporary version.
Mawa Kachori
Must TrySweet / Dessert
Udaipur's signature sweet snack — a deep-fried pastry filled with mawa (reduced milk), nuts, and cardamom. Crunchy, sweet, and completely addictive. Best eaten fresh from the oil.
Vegan note: Not vegan — contains mawa (milk solids).
Shree Mishtan Bhandar, near Jagdish Temple, Old City — the definitive version.
Rose Lassi
Must TryDrink
Thick churned yoghurt flavoured with rose syrup, chilled, and topped with cream. The version at Natraj Dining Hall appears in more travel writing about Udaipur than any other food in the city.
Vegan note: Not vegan — contains yoghurt and cream.
Natraj Dining Hall, Old City, near Jagdish Temple — cheapest and most authentic.
Street Food
The best street food in Udaipur is in the lanes between Jagdish Temple and Chand Pole Gate — kachoris, samosas, and chaat from high-turnover stalls. Go at peak breakfast hours (8–10am) and midday.
Restaurants
Ambrai Restaurant (on the opposite bank of Lake Pichola) has the best lake view of any restaurant in Rajasthan and is worth the premium for one meal. For traditional Rajasthani food without the tourist markup, Natraj Dining Hall near Jagdish Temple is the locals' choice.
Food Safety Tips
Bottled or filtered water only — never tap water.
Choose busy, high-turnover stalls with fresh, hot preparation for street food.
Avoid pre-cut fruit and raw salads from street vendors.

- Good access to Fateh Sagar and Sajjangarh
- Slightly more affordable
Cons
- 10–15 min auto to City Palace
