Is Jodhpur Safe for Tourists?

Jodhpur is one of the safer cities in Rajasthan for tourists — less crowded and less scam-intensive than Jaipur. The main issues are rickshaw tout behaviour and occasional aggressive vendor approaches in the old city. The genuine warmth of the Marwari people is the dominant experience.
Jodhpur is manageable for solo female travellers. The old city area around the clock tower and rooftop restaurants is busy and generally safe. Use Uber/Ola after dark rather than flagging random autos. Mehrangarh Fort is always well-staffed and safe. As in all of Rajasthan, modest dress (covered shoulders, below-knee skirts/trousers) reduces unwanted attention significantly.
At Jodhpur railway station and airport, auto-rickshaw drivers commonly claim that your hotel is 'closed' or 'full' and offer to take you somewhere else (where they earn commission). This is almost always false. Verify your booking with a direct call to your hotel before believing any driver. Book Uber/Ola from the airport rather than using unmetered autos.
Jodhpur's old city has persistent shopkeepers, particularly in textile and handicraft lanes. Entering a shop creates significant social pressure to buy. It's okay to browse, admire, and leave without purchasing — a polite but firm 'nahi chahiye' (no thank you) is sufficient. Don't be persuaded by special 'export prices' or 'factory direct' claims.
Jodhpur is a conservative city. At Mehrangarh Fort and temples, cover shoulders and knees. In the old city bazaars, modest dress is culturally respectful. On hotel rooftops and tourist restaurants, Western dress is fine. The rule: the more local the setting, the more conservatively dress.
